A Process for Composite Box Structure Optimization

The aeronautical industry is looking for the most efficient structure to reduce weight with taking into constrains coming from production, cost and maintenance. In order to define a concept like a box structure, it is important to gather all constrains and select the best product. Here, a process for composite optimization of a box structure will be presented with the help of Altair tools like OptiStruct and HyperStudy. Different optimization steps will be presented for stress field.

Use of Composite Material for Organic Architecture - Varna Regional Library

The keynote will introduce some recent applications where, with the help of advanced simulation tools such as Altair HyperWorks suite, architects have found original solutions to balance design, structural strength and cost. In particular, a study of innovative wooden composite façade system for the Varna Regional Library in Bulgaria, that acts as both an external support structure and louver system will be discussed.

Balloo Project: Crash Resilient Lightweight Fuel Tank Development for Aerospace Applications

The aim of the Balloo Project has been to develop a lightweight fuel tank resilient to crash events and presenting self-repairing capabilities. To achieve this goal, the project consortium has developed new materials, a new fuel tank architecture and developed a methodology to simulate drop tests and ballistic impacts on such kind of structure.

QSD - Optimization Software for Design to Cost

New thermoplastic processes like QSP, the one-minute tailored preform molding solution, open new degree of freedom that bridge the step between lay up optimization and mass production. Design methods must include process and cost evaluation to use at best the continuous fiber of composite and therefore answer to current industrial needs of simultaneous lightweighting and cost reduction.

QSD has been developed on the research results from ONERA, which have created a two steps optimization method that reduce calculation time but maximize the field of solution. This “stiffness matching” method finds the ideal target for mechanical performance, then the lay up to achieve it according to the possibility of your process.

CETIM and Altair have collaborated to create an intuitive workflow in HyperMesh environment that lead the designer to a smart composite design, with adapted fiber orientation and reduced material scraps thanks to draping analysis. The process know-how integrated in the second step optimization allows considering the minimization of part cost as an objective for the final choice of material and lay-up. QSD will be available to all design offices using Altair software from JEC World show.
